NLC Mobilizes Nationwide Mass Rally for Feb. 4
Nigerians Brace for Protest as Telecom Costs Soar Amid Economic Hardship
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has sounded the alarm over the recent 50% hike in telecom tariffs, declaring a nationwide mass rally on February 4, 2025, to resist what it calls an unjust burden on struggling citizens.
With inflation at record highs, food prices skyrocketing, and electricity costs rising, NLC President Joe Ajaero condemned the tariff increase as a direct attack on Nigerians already grappling with economic hardship. “A minimum wage of N70,000 cannot sustain citizens facing relentless price hikes,” Ajaero stated in a communique issued after the NLC’s National Administrative Council meeting in Abuja.
The mass rally, he emphasized, is a warning shot to the government and telecom regulators, demanding an immediate reversal of the tariff hike. Ajaero urged all Nigerian workers, informal sector players, and civil society allies to mobilize in solidarity against policies that deepen poverty and widen inequality.
Beyond the rally, the NLC is prepared to escalate resistance, including a potential nationwide boycott of telecom services and mass industrial actions if the government and the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) fail to engage in meaningful dialogue.
As Nigerians prepare to take to the streets, the big question remains: Will the government listen, or is this just the beginning of a bigger battle for economic survival?
